Breastfeeding technique: preparation of nursing mothers seen in a school hospital in Recife-PE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the breastfeeding technique in nursing and their children during their first appointment in a school hospital. It is a cross sectional quantitative study, performed through the interview with 44 nurses, using structured route based on the recommendation of World Health Organization to evaluate the breastfeeding technique. The association between the breastfeeding technique and the independent variables was estimated through Chi-square test and exact Fisher test. Out of the nurses studied only 43,2% presented the correct technique, including the position and chase. The nipple fissure was referred to by 92% of the women that presented the correct technique, being this association statically significant. In this study the technique was revealed to be a determinant factor in the prevention of fissures. The high prevalence of the incorrect technique in breastfeeding points to the need of early educational intervention with nursing.
