Abstract

The study aimed to understand the motherhood experience in women living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and their coping strategies during pregnancy and the arrival of the baby. A qualitative multiple case study was conducted through the analysis of in-depth interviews with two mothers. The participants reported fear, insecurity, and worries about staying alive for their children. Women had dramatic experiences in the postpartum period, because of infections caused by CF and repercussions on physical and mental health. Despite the physical challenges, becoming a mother was an achievement that generated hope and motivation to continue the CF treatment. Despite the emotional effort, they dealt resiliently with motherhood in the context of CF, sometimes using active strategies, and sometimes through social support, which facilitated the organization of care for the children and their treatment. It discusses the need to support and understand the subjective aspects and the social and family context of mothers living with CF who deal with continuous and exhausting treatment.
