A theoretic review on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and educational strategies to assist students with ADHD

Abstract

This article aims to present a review of the different approaches in relation to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and provides the support programs available in the United States and in Brazil to individuals with these characteristics. In addition, it presents some educational strategies available to this group of students. Education must seek alternatives in the pursuit of social and academic inclusion of an increasing number of students, trying to work around social, cultural and economic situations adverse to the educational standards offered by the traditional educational system. In the present context, one may observe the recurrent situation of students with learning disabilities and low academic performance. Within this group there are students who exhibit Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity - ADHD characteristics. They experience unfavorable conditions to their development and learning process in their daily lives, often resulting in cognitive and social-affective conflicts, which may lead to academic failure. These students exhibit characteristics such as high energy, curiosity and divergent thinking, they also present in the creative individual, which leads to a singular way to deal with knowledge and learning.
