Translating Anne Sexton's poems from The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975) into Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

This brief paper presents the translation into Brazilian Portuguese of five poems from The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975), by Anne Sexton (1928–1974). The poems After Auschwitz, The Poet of Ignorance, The Play, Doctors and Not So. Not So. were translated. When translating Sexton's poems into Portuguese, one of the most observed aspects was the simple and direct language through which the author deals with complex subjects, creating strong and impactful images. Sexton has not received much attention from the Brazilian publishing market and this is yet another contribution to the circulation of this important author's work in Brazil.

Guilherme Pereira Rodrigues Borges, Universidade de Brasília - UnB

Possui graduação em Letras/Tradução - Inglês (2014) e Mestrado em Estudos da Tradução (POSTRAD - 2017) pela Universidade de Brasília (UnB), onde exerceu os cargos de professor substituto e professor voluntário do curso de Letras - Tradução (Inglês), no Departamento de Línguas Estrangeiras e Tradução (LET). Atualmente, cursa doutorado em Literatura, com ênfase em tradução (POSLIT, UnB). Tem experiência de pesquisa na área de tradução literária, especificamente em tradução e recepção de teatro de língua inglesa no Brasil.
