Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the Canibal tale (1995), by Moacyr Scliar. An analysis involving two characters, Barbara and Angelina, who due to an airplane accident were imprisoned in the highlands of Bolivia. "Barbara" is the feminine of the word "barbarian," meaning inhuman and rude, and "Angelina" comes from the word "angel", meaning kind and resigned. Such characters through the meaning of their respective names begin to act more clearly within the narrative. Barbara being seen as the owner of some qualities, which are valued by an elitist and capitalist society, characterizing her as the typical white woman, rich, beautiful and still flying plane. Already Angelina is seen as a woman possessed of discredited qualities within this society, because besides being very thin, it is still black. Characters that favor the analysis of the story mentioned from the studies of Wolfgang Iser (2002) about the acts of pretend and Liliana Reales and Rogério de Souza Confortin (2008) about the introduction of the elements of the narrative.
