Abstract

In this article we seek to analyze the discourses about the actions of local elite women in the public sphere, mainly through their engagement in philanthropic activities. For this purpose, we use the publications of the Social Column of Folha do Norte do Paraná, a daily newspaper published and produced in Maringá from 1962 to 1979. To do so, we use Foucaultian discourse analysis to question discursive constructions. about female engagement in the public sphere, as well as gender constructions and models of femininity conveyed in the news papers Social Column. We believe that the action of these women of the local elites present in the journal had a double role while contributing to the maintenance of the status quo, also served as a pedagogical tool for their readers. In addition, by problematizing such discourses, we sought to understand how womens organization through these care and philanthropic actions were triggered as strategies and tactics used by these women for their insertion and performance in the public sphere.
