Abstract

Microscopic studies on biofilms that occur on mangrove sediments show the interaction between microorganisms  and secondary mineral production. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies show the evidence of corrosion of  biofilms minerals by microorganisms, with the dissolution of crystals of feldspar and mica, and erosion of quartz crystals,  characterizing the stages of physical and chemical weathering (neoformation). These weathering mechanisms are  influenced by the local pH, salinity and the environment redox state.
