Existence in crisis: limit situations in Karl Jaspers

Abstract

To try to reveal, in a short essay, the various facets of limit-situations and their consequences for human existence is a misplaced idea. Instead, we intend to explore, based on some indications provided by Karl Jaspers, some moments that constitute them. We chose to approach the theme from five perspectives: the limit, the meaning, the nothingness, the suffering and the finitude. In suffering, we will undertake a brief textual critique of passages from two central works by Karl Jaspers: Psychologie der Weltanschauungen, from 1919, and Philosophie, from 1932. In doing this, we will be able to notice a change in the way suffering is presented. Although subtle, this change leads us not only to specify the role of limit-situations in the Jaspersian philosophy of existence, but also to uncover a tension between limit-situations and experiences linked with them.

Author Biographies

Gerson Brea, Universidade de Brasília

Graduação (2000) em Filosofia (Magister Artium em Filosofia, Teologia Evangélica e Literatura Alemã Moderna e Contemporânea) e doutorado em Filosofia (2004) pela Universität Augsburg. Desde 2004 é professor do Departamento de Filosofia da Universidade de Brasília. Atua principalmente nas seguintes áreas: fenomenologia, filosofia existência, ética, política, hermenêutica filosófica. Entre os autores com quem tem trabalhado atualmente destacam-se Karl Jaspers, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Hannah Arendt, Wilhelm Dilthey, Albert Camus, Herbert Marcuse.

Professor da Escola de Pós-Graduação da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Tohoku (Japão). Área de especialidade: Jurisprudência, que cobre principalmente três campos: a teoria do direito, a teoria da justiça e a metodologia jurídica. Pesquisa atual se concentra em três tópicos: questões em litígios de direito público, especialmente em casos ambientais e de desastres; a ideia de justiça na história intelectual do século 20; e técnicas de análise jurídica e redação jurídica sob a influência do método jurídico alemão
