Abstract

Between January 1889 and March 1890, Nietzsche is admitted in Jena’s psychiatric hospital. By this period, according to the medical record, several coprophagy episodes are noted. Following these episodes as gestures in continuity with the philosophical discourses of his works, this paper intends to investigate in which way Nietzsche’s texts articulate the simbology of excrement, inscribing themselves within a long heritage in German culture, that, since Luther, utilized it as a critical strategy. Finally, the paper will discuss the pertinence of an ethos that would cross these texts from the appropriation of the image of Cynics and their complex treatment of the issue of human dejects.
