ABSTRACT
With technological advances, society has modified its way of acting in several spheres and,
in the professional scope, this is well accentuated. For many areas, the use of digital
information and communication technologies has become essential for efficient
professional performance, whereas accelerated technological development requires
constant improvement. In this context, Distance Education (DE) online has been
highlighted as an appropriate educational modality for both continuing and continuing
education of professionals from various fields. DE, however, involves a series of processes,
or phases, from planning and implementation/production, to the actual course offer, and
its development involves the work of a specialized multidisciplinary team. The objective
of this work is to analyze the role of the librarian in online DE teams and their perspectives
of insertion in this area. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, to
understand the thinking of librarians working in Fortaleza, regarding their participation
in DE. The results revealed that, although the librarian still does not know his potential
for acting in the DE, upon discovering him, he is competent, creative, innovative and able
to strongly influence the quality of the courses carried out in this modality. It is concluded
that Distance Education is a new area for the librarian, who is responsible for the
appropriation and development of the skills and abilities necessary for this new work
space, as well as for its training institutions, to support it in this challenge.
